El TOEFL examina las cuatro habilidades que son importantes para una comunicación efectiva: hablar, escuchar, leer y escribir. Algunas preguntas exigen a los examinados combinar más de una habilidad. Para tener éxito académico en ³colleges² y universidades de habla inglesa, los estudiantes necesitan ser capaces de combinar sus habilidades lingüísticas en el salón de clase.

La nueva versión del examen dura cerca de cuatro horas. Todas las secciones se completan en un día, y los examinados pueden tomar notas a lo largo del examen. El nuevo TOEFL trae una sección oral, que incluye seis tareas, y los examinados llevan audífonos y hablan a un micrófono cuando responden. Las respuestas son grabadas digitalmente y transmitidas a la red de calificación en línea (Online Scoring Network) de ETS donde son calificadas por personas competentes. Además, la sección de escritura ha sido extendida. El nuevo examen exige a los examinados escribir en respuesta a material que han oído y leído, y componer un ensayo que apoye una opinión.

• ¿Por qué cambia el examen? El examen mide lo que ³colleges² y universidades necesitan saber: la capacidad de un estudiante potencial para usar el inglés en un medio académico. La nueva sección oral evalúa la capacidad de una persona para usar el inglés hablado, y las nuevas tareas que integran lo oral y lo escrito miden la capacidad para combinar información de más de una fuente y producir algo a partir de ellos.

• ¿Es posible rendir un simulacro de examen y obtener una nota? Sí, un simulacro de examen está disponible en ³TOEFL Practice Online² en www.ets.org/toeflpractice.
• ¿Cómo será evaluada la nueva sección oral? Cada una de las seis tareas será calificada de 0 a 4, y la suma de esas calificaciones será convertida a una escala de 0 a 30. Personas competentes calificarán las respuestas.

El SAT Reasoning Test�: El examen de razonamiento SAT es una medición de lo que aprendiste en el colegio y tu capacidad de aplicar dicho conocimiento. GRE® (Graduate Record Examinations®)

Test Descriptions

GRE General Test The General Test measures skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not necessarily related to any particular field of study. The test is composed of analytical writing, verbal, and quantitative sections. The computer-based General Test is offered year round at authorized testing centers worldwide. The paper-based General Test is given in October and March in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available.

GRE Subject Tests The Subject Tests measure undergraduate achievement in eight specific fields of study and assume undergraduate majors or extensive background in those disciplines. The tests are given in November, December, and April at authorized paper-based testing centers worldwide.

How to Register for the GRE®

You can download the complete 2005-06 GRE Bulletin (including registration forms). You may register for the GRE General Test online, by phone, fax, or mail. Find the Regional Registration contact information at www.ets.org/gre. Consider admission deadlines, and register early to get preferred test dates and avoid the crowded testing period of November through January. For the GRE Subject Tests, register online or by mail. For additional registration details, refer to the GRE Information and Registration Bulletin, available on the GRE Web site at www.ets.org/codelst.html or at ETS representative sites, educational advising centers, universities, and English language centers. Note: The Test Center Lists and Institution Code List are not printed in the 2005-06 GRE Bulletin. Refer to the GRE Web site at www.ets.org/gre for the most up-to-date information. Paper copies of these lists are available through ETS or its representatives and at many local educational advising centers, universities, and libraries outside the United States and Canada.

Individuals who register for the computer-based General Test will receive a free CD-ROM containing GRE POWERPREP® software. Individuals who register for the paper-based General Test or a Subject Test will receive a free practice book. The free material is also available in downloadable format on the GRE Web site at www.ets.org/pracmat. Registration for the free GRE Search Service, which matches prospective graduate students with participating graduate schools, is available on the GRE Web site.

MAT® (Miller Analogies Test)

The MAT is a high-level mental ability test that consists of 100 analogical problems. The MAT is accepted by over 2,300 graduate school programs as a part of their admissions process. The test items use subject matter from a variety of fields, such as mathematics, natural science, social science, literature, and fine arts. You will have 50 minutes to complete the test.

Offered at more than 600 test centers throughout the U.S. and Canada, the MAT is given on an as-needed basis at most test centers.

The GMAT® test is a standardized assessment of general verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills:

• the quantitative section measures basic mathematical skills; the ability to reason quantitatively and solve quantitative problems; and interpret graphic data
• the verbal section tests the ability to read and comprehend written material; evaluate arguments; and correct written material
• the analytical writing section determines the ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas.

The Computer-Adaptive Format

The Verbal and Quantitative sections of the GMAT® exam are delivered in computer adaptive format. In each section, there is a large pool of potential questions ranging from a low to high level of difficulty. When you begin a section, the computer serves you a question of moderate difficulty. If you answer the first question correctly, the computer will give you a harder question next. If you answer the first question incorrectly, your next question will be easier. This process will continue until you complete the section, at which point the computer will have an accurate assessment of your ability level in that subject area.

In a computer-adaptive test (CAT), only one question at a time is presented. Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, you may not skip, return to, or change your responses to previous questions. If you answer a question incorrectly by mistake or correctly by randomly guessing, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questions that are at the appropriate level of difficulty for you. Random guessing can significantly lower your scores.

How do I find Schools?

GMAT® test takers may elect to be included in the Graduate Management Admission Search Service® (GMASS®). GMASS® is an optional service available to any candidate wishing to make his or her name and demographic information available to business schools. The service is free to all students taking the GMAT® exam. If a school is interested in having a particular candidate apply to their program, they will then contact students directly.

Strategies for Taking the GMAT®

There are several preparation tools available on www.mba.com to do so. First, by signing up for an account on www.mba.com, you can download free test preparation software. This software offers two full GMAT CAT® exams. In addition, on the web site, you can purchase The Official Guide for GMAT® Review or GMAT® Paper Tests. These tools contain retired GMAT® test questions for you to use to prepare for the exam.
