Interview - Westminster College, UtahMilko Markov attends Westminster College, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a sophomore, majoring in International Business with emphasis in Entrepreneurship
Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?
I wanted to obtain Liberal Arts education, which gives me knowledge from various fields — from business to arts, and science. Why did you choose your university? The major reason to attend Westminster College was the high quality of the business programs offered here. The business faculties are friendly, and easy to approach if I have question or need some help. The location of Westminster College allows me for less than 20 minutes to reach one of the best ski resorts in the country, as well as explore lakes, mountains, and national parks. During the summer I usually go with my friends waterskiing in the surrounding lakes, or camping in beautiful places like the Zion National Park. What do you like best? The combination of business classes, extracurricular experience, and cooperating with faculties allow me to expand my perceptions of the surrounding world. What do you miss most? Although I feel like home in Westminster College, I miss the Bulgarian cuisine. What was your biggest surprise? Everything in U.S.A. happens more quickly, and in bigger size — especially in the business field. This rush brings some excitement and curiosity in me to push my skills and knowledge to higher level. ...your biggest disappointment? I am most disappointed by the number of cars in U.S.A. and unavailable public transportation. How have you handled finances? My scholarships at Westminster College make my education here possible. What are your activities? I have created the Westminster Entrepreneurship Club, where both undergraduate and MBA students work on development of their business ideas. I have the opportunity to attend the Micro-finance Research Symposium where I presented my research on micro-credit programs in the developing countries. How easy is making friends? The student life at Westminster College is full of social events where you could not only relax from classes, but also meet new friends. How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country? In short run, I see myself going back to Eastern Europe and starting my own business with social mission to help people there improve their lives. In long run, I see myself as major catalyst for alleviation of poverty around the world. Both my short and long term goals are due to the quality of education I receive in Westminster College. The unique combination of entrepreneurial business skills, and knowledge about science and arts allows me to view the world around me from many different prospective. What is your advice to other students? Decide what are your goals in life, and what do you want to be your role in the world. A small, liberal arts college like Westminster will prepare you not only to be a “global citizen”, but also will equip you with skills to bring positive, social changes to our world.
