Interview - Texas Intensive English ProgramCuong “Billy” Quach from Vietnam is studying at the Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP) in Austin, Texas, in preparation for pursuing a degree in Business.
Why did you decide to enter a U.S. summer intensive English program?
Because I wanted to perfect my English abilities in speaking, writing, listening, and TIEP had a convenient schedule. How did you choose your summer English program? The program contains twenty hours of classroom instruction per week that helps students learn and practice English all the time. Also, the program is in Austin, Texas, and my aunt lives in Austin. TIEP was the best choice for me. What did you like best about studying here? The international students who come from different countries are so kind and friendly. The teachers are very helpful to the students. They are always ready to give individualized help. What did you miss most about home? Of course, I miss my family so much because this is the first time that I have lived far away from home. What was your biggest surprise about U.S. life and education? I learned that the U.S.A. is one of the best countries in its educational system, its teaching methods, economy, and many other fields. The academic degrees are recognized all over the world. How did you handle: ...Language differences I tried to learn more about vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. ...Finances? My parents helped me financially, and I live with my aunt. ...Adjusting to a different educational system? I tried to practice English as much as possible outside of class and make new friends. How did your English improve? Since you completed the program, how has it helped you in your work or studies. When I came to the U.S.A., I didn’t know much English, so I was afraid to talk with other people. After studying at TIEP for two semesters, now I can have a conversation with native speakers anywhere. I think the program will have a favorable condition to me when I study in college. What were your activities? My favorite sport is swimming. Austin has many places to swim. How easy or difficult is it making friends? It is easy to make friends by studying together and through cultural exchange of international students and American students. How relevant was your U.S. summer English program to your personal goals and to the needs of your country? I want to be a business man. My country is a developing country which joined the World Trade Organization, so TIEP was a good choice to help me open my own business. The program will help me to get more knowledge of business management. What is your advice to other students? Study hard and choose a good place like TIEP to study English.
